Post war, my dad was in a 'killing time camp' at Hitchcock, Tx. where they mothballed brand new Avengers and Helldivers by the ....load, many of them straight from the factories.
He didn't actually participate; he was one of a few who were told they would 'volunteer' to cook. He did so and was spared a summer of hard labor in the Texas sun on a concrete ramp. Their names for the a/c in question would probably draw me a reprimand from the CO here though. The rest of his tales from that posting sound more like one of those comedy WWII movies prevalent in the sixties.
"What did you do in the war Daddy?" " I threw tropical cheese rounds off a bridge in the middle of the night from a moving truck."
Restore everything;fly everything!
Doug.
