Hurricane Restoration

Fri Oct 29, 2004 11:18 pm

Who are the Hurricane restoration gurus in the northeast?? I working on the recovery of an airframe about to be obliterated by development, but a restoration is a little out of my league.

is it restorable? most hurries are really trashed.

hi peter, if your intrested in selling the wreck (if its good for resto) hit me up bling@ozzienet.net

if not, goodluck. i guess airframes uk would be your best bet they are all tooled up for the hurri.

Which Hurricane is this?

What Hurricane is this? North East, I am assuming from the replies that this is US/Canada side of the pond? Derelict airframe or fairly complete?

Condition....

Sat Oct 30, 2004 11:10 am

What sort of condition is it in? Belly landing or more of an impact?

Remains....

Sat Oct 30, 2004 2:05 pm

Have you seen the remains? is there much left? I'm wondering why these have not been recovered so far.....

A Hurricane doesn't any more difficult to restore than anything else...

What are you talking about HarvardIV? Have you any experience of restoring Hurricanes? They require something like three times the man-hours of some spam can like a P-51 to restore, not to mention specialist tooling that is no longer available but must be recreated from scratch. Ever wondered why there aren't more Hurricanes flying?

Sat Oct 30, 2004 3:45 pm

That's doubtful...

What do you mean that's doubtful?? Are you talking the time frame? The special tooling? Please do us the courtesy of an explanatoin. I want to know how much experience you have with Hurricanes. I promise you that it's much more involved than your T-6!

Yeap, Hurries are mean beasties to rebuild.

Being part wood, part metal, it takes both wood working and sheet metal skills.

And being good with metal doesn't mean you're good with wood. And wood crafdtsmen are getting rarer!

Possible Recovery

Sat Oct 30, 2004 8:57 pm

It's way early in the game yet, but I would assume that this may be a static possibility.

Among various requests to ID artifacts found by hunters etc., I have a recent request to look at an airframe and try to do something positive with it. It is just a frame, little else. It was in a thick wooded remote (boat access plus a tough bushwhack) area until recently when Homeland Security added lots of Border Patrol and stations. The area now is rapidly turning into a lakeside housing development for Patrol Agents.

It is currently "salvage" material for the logging contractor clearing the lots and road right of ways. He would like to see a positive outcome. My hopes would be a museum with the resources to make it a display.
