Can someone explain the difference between the two fuselage gun pack types?

The two-gun pod is the style used on earlier B-25C/Ds, and the two single-gun pods came on the later B-25H/Js. I'd have to dig out my references, but I think the earlier style may have been a feild mod, whereas the H/J came with the package guns from the factory.
