I feel blessed to have met Gen. Tibbets and spoke to him at length about his aviation career. Neat story he told was of his first airplane ride when he was a kid flying in a biplane with pilot Doug Davis (winner of the 1929 National Air Race in the Travel Air Mystery Ship) throwing Baby Ruth candy bars with hankerchief parachutes attached out of the plane in an advertising stunt over some racetrack. What a guy...

"Duty" is a great read and gives you good insight into a man who served his country to the best of his abilities without regret.

According to Yahoo News, he requested no funeral or headstone "fearing it would provide his detractors with a place to protest."

Maybe it's just me, but it seems a sad end to a life full of devotion to one's country.

I thought it was very sad that the line to see "R. Lee Ermey" at the WW2 Weekend was about 100 times longer than the line to see Tibbetts. A real sign of the times... Digger

According to the article, he wanted his ashes scattered over the English Channel:

"He told the Dispatch in 2005 that he wanted his ashes scattered over the English Channel, where he loved to fly during the war."

I'd say that's fairly fitting.
