Anyone know if the Red Bull P-38 will tour the states

Tue Oct 23, 2007 6:24 pm

Anyone know if the Red Bull P-38 will tour the states before heading overseas? I would love to see her fly here in the US before leaving. Maybe get Glacier Girl and Red Bull together. Maybe get a few more P-38's together as well. Thunder over Michigan maybe?

I'll second that! 8) Early War: Silver and OD!

Still, I would love to see another gathering at Thunder.

How many could there be?

I could see 5, maybe 6 P-38's gather

1. Glacier Girl
2. Red Bull
3. Ruff Stuff
4. 23 Skidoo
5. Putt Putt Maru (if flying by then)
6. Jack Croul's

this is of course a dream list. Logistics probably wouldn't allow this to happen. Too far, too expensive, too much wear and tear.

heard that it will fly over as much of the usa as is necessary to get to europe.

So then that means they won't crate it and ship it? .... they'll fly it to the east coast, crate it, then ship it.

Or maybe Operation Bolero III?

Wed Oct 24, 2007 6:36 pm

Yeah, because I and II went so well! AS always I error on the side of safety and say ship it over.

True.

Still I would love to see those 2 38's, and Liberty Belle run together over Greenland.

I dont know, coming from a die hard warbird fan, i just eat this stuff up!

They did it during the war. I think these aircraft are maintained better than they were during the war, so why not?

Money. Thats why, but maybe funds will be collected?

I agree with you all the way that it would be awsome to see it done. It would be. To see those Restored warbirds flying together with that backdrop would be great. As a pilot I have many safety concerns about it. True they are in great shape, but it is 60 year old hardware and let's face it, the track record on doing it is not great. And by later in the war P-38's were indeed being shipped by boat to Europe, not flown.

I'm not sure that is the case. It certainly depends on the operator, but they were certainly were well maintained in many cases. It was a little tougher in forward improvised air bases but the aircraft on the European front were certainly well taken care of. The Pacific front there was a lot of sand and dust and such that made maintenance a little more difficult but they put plenty of man hours into keeping the birds maintained probably more than they do now (of course they don't put on the hours that they did then either).

Yeah, because I and II went so well! AS always I error on the side of safety and say ship it over.

They loose about 2000 shipping containers in the ocean a year. Of course it is a very small percentage of the 18 million containers in service but...either way there is some risk involved. I think doing it for a photo op would be incredibly lame but at the same time you send it over on a ship and a crane drops it and turns the container into a pancake well you are still up the same creek, although at least you have viable recovery if you land on a glacier but if the container goes over board you will be waiting for the next shuttle to go into the drink for radar images to find your container.

WarbirdDriver;
You are so funny! (or prophetic!)
Do you know which states it will fly over?
Maybe I can step outside when it flys by!?

Jerry,

I believe the states of insanity, altered reality and confusion will be covered extensively.

And you think I am going to grab that bait?????

Although I do believe that the state of extreme disappointment has been chosen for all stops, for obvious reasons. Cockpit tours will of course not be given by friendly and helpful ground crews and no autographs will be available to be signed on the days program. Stand by at a gas pump near you and you too can see it fly bye.

ps DARN!!!! I took the bait after all. (but hey, who could resist such tempting bait!!!!!!)
