Side Note:

Can anyone give me a approximate guess as to how many of those replica T6/Zeros are still flying? Im looking for a fairly accurate number

Hey man,

What the heck is the name of that movie? And, what was the story line?

It threw me off a little seeing F-14's against Zeros...

Pretty funny really, but it looked like a serious movie.

Splash the Zeroes

The movie was made around 1980 and was titled "The Final Countdown". The plot involved the carrier USS Nimitz encountering a time warp and being sent back in time to the period just before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and all the fun and games that entails.

Suffice it to say that Citizen Kane it ain't, but it is an amusing bit of light weight entertainment and what flying there is is pretty good. I don't know about other parts of the world; but it was recently on cable TV here in Australia.

Right on, I'll have to check the video store for that one. And when I say "Video Store" I mean the "Internet."

But if there's any government or copyright infringement people reading this I'll revert back to my original meaning of "Video Store."

Thanks for fillin' me in. I found other "bits" of the film on youtube and it sounds like it would be a really interesting movie.

If redone today, with new script work, etc. It would blow any Hollywood film out of the water. Oops, is my displeasure for Hollywood showing through?

Cheers,

David

I don't know. I remember seeing it a few times long ago and I think I remember it was really bad (in a good way?).

Oh yeah, the Olympic Flight museum has a "Tora Zero." I can't find an N number or anything right now. Contact me if you want further info.

Scott,

I see you don't have this one up on the registry. I'm assuming all "Tora Zeros" are in bold? I'll try to get something to you if you want it. Again contact me.

Skip Bailey was flying one of the Zeros when the Tomcat went by, said he almost lost it when he hit the jet wash. He told me this about a year after the movie was filmed.

Martin Caidin wrote the screen play.

The special edition DVD is a must have. The film has been nicely restored, and the interviews with the Tomcat pilots are as entertaining as the film.

One of the Tomcat pilots almost lost it too. At 2:45 into the clip he snaps left while trying to stay behind the Zero he enters an accelerated stall. It doesn't look much like a stall in the film when you watch it the first time, but if you watch his elevators, you can see the large deflection required to pull the nose up and the engines transitioning into afterburner, both of which are indicative of a stall recovery.

Great movie!! It's one of those "what if's".

I wonder what the people thought when they heard that wake of jet engine coming toward them? :supz: Turn and burn...YAHOO!

It's kinda sad though since the F-14 don't fly no more. :(

How about "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"? Good CGI of P-40's and B-24's. I'm kinda interested why they picked the B-24 though. Not that it was seen much in the film except at Sky Captain HQ.
