Great shots Jack.
It's neat to realise that Japanese Sandman II is still with us today (to some extent)
Anyone have an idea of how much of JS2 still exists?

Jack,
Would love to get a couple prints of Clyde Curtin and the F-86. One for me and one for Clyde.
These images are retreads, but, appropriate to the context of Jack's post.

can't help much but here are a few sites with some pre-recovery pics. The latest Classic Wings has some pics of one of the P-38's at Precision Aerospace, but I'm not sure which on it is as I don't have the magazine at hand; at any rate the one shown is apparently complete but thoroughly chewed.

Too bad all of Sandman II couldn't have been extracted and kept together. I hate to see a combat veterans scattered to the winds in other restoration. But I guess it beats the alternative.
From the sound of the write-up and 2003 pictures it sounds as if the rest of Sandman II is still sitting there.

I agree, that's what it sounds like reading the info, but I'm not so sure; I think the way it was worded is confusing. I can clearly recall seeing a pic of the fuselage pod of this aircraft in outside storage at Precision, so I can only assume that the rest is there. IIRC Mr. Fagen has parts for (or from...) 12 P-38's there, so you'd have to think they really cleared out the jungle.
I think the photo was one of Setter's, so that tells you how long ago that was.

Supposedly, several major parts have found their way to the US, and may well result in a flyable P-38 in the fullness of time.

Sorry for the lack of detail in the pic.
They had lots of these "Rising Sun" sticker/decals at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Any record of Japanese pilots adorning their aircraft with Aerial Victory markings?

the japanese used victory markings. but it represented the victories the particular plane achieved, not neccessarily by the pilot who flew it, as many japanese aircraft were flown by different pilots. their are exceptions, where certain pilots had their own mounts, but these were the big shots like kobayashi who's tony kill markings were exclusively his.

I want to agree but I am afraid not. It looks more like it's been painted on a darker patch to make it stand out. The crosses below are similar, and are what made me ask the qustion in the first place. They look painted on to me, and don't match later markings, which I am pretty sure are stickers...
