I kicked butt today

Fri Aug 10, 2007 11:30 am

I was telling Mrs. Mudge that I was thinking of quitting because it's getting kinda' "not fun" any more.
Today the WX was so bad at our destination airports (MRB & CHO) that we just stayed in the pattern and did take-offs and landings. (Yes, they came out even. :P )
I was in rare form. Did 4 regular, 2 short field and 2 soft field. I did all of them as if I done 'em a hundred times before. Got a little X windy for the last few and I had to correct with aileron & rudder a bit but nothing harsh.
My last landing (short field) was a bit hard but I got it down on my mark and stopped within limits.
Maybe I'll keep this up after all.

You gotta keep it up. Running into those hurdles, and feeling like you really stink just means you are getting better.

quit

Mudge, if you are near a rating I'd sure hate to see you quit before getting your license, yoou have invested time and money. Remember once you get it, short of landing on the White House lawn, you are a pilot forever. Your medical could expire, your BFR would not be current, but you are stiil a licensed pilot. However it is supposed to be fun, and you are already a pilot, you have done it and know you can do it. I'd suggest something new, get out of the area and do a small trip, perhaps fly to AOPA at Frederick, Md. or near Va Beach-Norfolk to see Jerry Yegan's flying museum. Take an insrutuctor or good pilot with you and only go in good weather. There are times I have taken a break from flying and usually I am more eager than ever to get back. Good luck, lot's of guys on your side.

Keep it up Mudge. I can see taildraggers in your future. That's when you start having fun!

Mudge,

We all go through periods during our training that frustrate us, but DO NOT GIVE UP! I had LOTS of trouble learning when to flare and how to "feel" the dynamics of ground effect. Ellen and I went to a busy GA airport and spent an afternoon watching other students struggle. Watching others actually gave me a little bit of self-confidence that I wasn't a hopeless case, and things moved forward rather quickly after that little picnic lunch with my wife.

Jerry...I a bit more of a realist than to think that would be possible.
I just want to drive something that's fun. Something with say...2000HP.

WTG Mr. Mudge!

And you thought it was all over when you hit Winchester over the head....

2000hp...hmmm that covers quite a bit of territory in a hurry...not to mention the gas bill.

Well...Get in...buckle up...hang on! :drink3:

Keep it up Mudge.

We all hit BAD days in flight training. I felt similarly to you about some of the instrument work, but thankfully got over the hump recently. It's tough when you're trying to learn something new, but if you're not hitting hard spots, you're either REALLY talented, or you're just normal, and having to learn.

I agree with everyone here. Keep it up. I once had to make a froced landing during training, and almost gave it up, but my instructor made me continue. Something that I am forever in debt to him for.

Now for the rest of the story. When I was telling Mrs. Mudge that I might quit, her reply was, "Well, you make your own decision but I think you just oughta' just put on your "BIG BOY" underwear and work through it." She does have a unique way of cutting through the BS.

I think Mrs. Mudge is going to have to get a second job . . .

Great Job Mudge!

Mudge, I was going to offer you a front seat Spitfire flight since your Lurch size self is out of cg limits in the rear. However it only has the dainty little Merlin, and doesn't meet your criteria of 2000 hp. unless we get 115/145 octane fuel and use 22 lbs boost, which we aren't doing unless Jack or Mike has a half price sale on overhauls. So, I'd stay in touch with Eric Downing who has just the airborn destroyer you are seeking .Alternately, you could buy a nice Griffon engine Spitfire and I'll help you fly it.
