Whatever Pappy was and wasn't in his postwar life and whether his version of his shoot down is true or not, he stepped up fully when he was needed, knowing full well that that decision could cost him his life from one moment to the next. Name an airport after him? Go for it.

For whatever reason he "left" them, it surely wasn't due to cowardice. Pappy was many things, but that wasn't one of them. Were there better leaders? Maybe. Was he a flawed individual? Certainly. But he was only interested in one thing, shooting down Japanese. Well, maybe two things

I have great respect for all the Blacksheep, but it just wouldn't be the same without Pappy.

Not really good leadership

In all fairness, there was a lot of heavy drinking going on during the war, not just Pappy.

Althought this is true, only to a certain extent has it's to broad a statement. But Boyington took drinking to the next level and was in a class by himself.

What about Blackburn and others who had drinking problems?

All the more amazing that he did what he did. I certainly can't say that I've shot down 20+ aircraft, survived the whole ordeal, and awarded the MOH.

I've never heard any of the remaining Blacksheep really talk bad about Pappy...
We all have our own faults. Its what he accomplished that counts in my book.

Amazing more describes Bob Hanson, Don Aldrich, Marion Carl
or Joe Foss.
