Flying Civilian Canadiar CL-41 Tutors

Mon Aug 06, 2007 8:59 am

So I was sitting around CFD Mountain View with a co-worker of mine last week on a day we were wx'd out from flying. We were debating the merrits of owning/operating the various types that are on the field awaiting sale/delivery to new owners. Our discussion centered around the T-33 vs the Tutor as a practical warbird jet to operate.

Long story short, we started to wonder about the eventual fate of the dozens of CL41s lying around once the Snowbirds are done with them. That is, will they be scrapped or sold?

This promted me to do a little searching around online and I was surprised to find that there appear to be 4-5 Tutors (flying) in civilian hands in the US. Can anyone comment on who owns them, how regularly the fly and what colours they're painted in these days?

Cheers

Edward

Jack is referring to our good friend and long-time warbirder Bill Lamberton who received his Tutor as a trade from the RCAF for his single seat Vampire which is now in the museum in Ottawa. The Tutor does fly pretty regularly and makes appearances at several local airshows and fly-ins.

Far as I know Bill's is the only CT-114 Tutor flying in civilian hands, the rest are ex-Malaysian Air Force CL-41G Tebuans which are slightly different. Last time I talked to Crown Assets they said when the Tutors are sold, they will be sold de-milled and static only. My guess is that you might see a couple more slip through the cracks and end up flying in civilian hands, but not many.

The Vampire was traded to the Government of Canada with the Comox Air Force Museum being the custodians of the jet. Last time I was there it was still hidden in one of the hangars on the base but it is pulled out and fired up once and a while. Unless they've transferred it recently, the Vampire should still be at Comox.

I can't recall seeing a Canadian Forces CT-114 both Snowbirds and Non-Snowbirds with out the external fuel tanks. I guess it's because they were based in Moosejaw Saskatewan and I'm in Ontario.

My mistake, BLR is quite right about the Vampire being at Comox and not Ottawa. As an interesting aside, when the Vampire-Tutor trade went through, the RCAF put the condition on that the plane could be painted in whatever colors Bill decided with the exception that it never be painted in Snowbirds markings.

All the tutors outside should have gone through the demil process by now as there was a group of tutors inside one of the hangars that were all in reserve for the snowbirds. These had their enginesremoved but were otherwise complete.

We use to have a guy in Hartford, CT, that had one of the CL-41G Tebuans.
It was pretty neat, but I haven't seen it in about 9 years.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I was curious as to how many were Tutor versus Tebuans.
