Fri Aug 03, 2007 8:00 am

I saw this photo on that amazing Grumman Thread and am interested if anybody has infoon the Jeep APU that is in front of the Cougar?

I'm a Jeep guy (airplanes first, however!!! ) and I was wondering about the set-up, who did the mods, what exactly was the APU system, what time periods were they in service, and if there are any around still etc.? It would make a neat vehicle at a military show!
Thanks.

I remember seeing those things running around the deck in "The Briges at Toko Ri"!

Harry Doan had 2, they are more of a "clown car" Jeep with a front axle and the castor in the rear. I don't remember what was used for the 24v source, think it can right off the flat head.

Were have been looking for one for our Jeep collection, if anyone knows of one please contact me.

These were built by O.E. Szekely Co. of Philadelphia. They used many Jeep parts to build their 3 wheeled self propelled 24V APU unit. It replaced the front axle with a solid drive axle and the rear had a steerable single or set of 2 small wheels. They are most commonly seen during the Korean War era.

rwdfresno, are those examples part of your personal collection? Ever considered parting with one of them? 8)

They belong to a guy named Brian Platzer in San Diego CA who posts on another forum that I frequent and they mentioned that they may be selling off a couple of them.
