B-25 conversion?

Tue Jul 10, 2007 2:05 pm

Coming back from Thunder, all I have on the brain are Mitchell's, so I started to wonder?

What if you had a B-25J, and you wanted to back date it to a D or C? What changes you would need to make to the J in order for it to be exact?, And who would you have do this?

My only guess would be Aero Trader. Of course this is providing that you didnt have enough money to buy that B model , or King 9. 8)

Well if you wanted to go exact it would be such an expensive time consuming process you may as well buy the C model and $3-$4 million later you will have your perfect aircraft. There would be significant modifications such as the narrowing of the aft fuselage and removal of the tail gunner position. That would require essentially fabricating the entire thing from scratch since not many of the formers or stringers would be usable, not to mention you would need to build the reinforcements for the lower turret, fabricate most of he turret lower turret. Modifications to the bomb bay especially the bomb racks and shackles. Moving the turret station to the rear of the bomb bay and significant former and stringer modifications to remove the reinforcing in the forward fuselage and ad it to the rear. Modification of the navigators station, radio operators station, removal of the side blisters. Exhausts system, fuel tanks, armor plating, revert all weatherization modifications, and brake control system among many other details.

It needs about $2 million to make it a flier and another $1 million to make it factory fresh.

You can get in a nice flying J model Mitchell for under a million. It will take a particular individual to go that route, although one day it will happen. Could be sooner than later.
