This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

My friends and I were lost in Indiana not too far from Indianapolis, and we stumbled across this airfield of some sort. On it it had a garage that had several stalls on it with Army Tanks in it. I remember seeing an A-4 I think and a PBR river rat boat, and of all things a training device for the Apollo program. It looked like more aircraft were in the woods. We have no idea what this is. Any ideas?

That was it! Thanks. We had no idea where we were as that is not where we were going that day. Very cool place.

Mustangdriver,
I don't have that one in the Locator, although no big surprise as I really haven't researched Indiana yet. Can you help me with an exact location? The address given by Brandon above does not match the rough description of the location.

It's definately Ropkey's. He owns the Sherman used in the movie "Tank". The site you found on Indy's west side is the original location. Like you said, there's a small airfield there with a few aircraft, tanks, etc., but most of the armor collection has been moved to a new location in Crawfordsville, IN. Mr. Ropkey's collection has been featured on the History Channel in different shows.

I am not sure how much help I will be, but I will try. We were lost as hell.

Mike, the address of the location Mustangdriver saw is:
6424 W 79th St
Indianapolis, IN 46278
Ropkey sold the property for big $$$, hence the move to the Crawfordsville address. Not sure where the aircraft were moved, but Mr. Ropkey himself said the his son has the X-14 aircraft. Bought it government surplus....guess it was going to be scrapped at Ft. Rucker. I believe he also said they had an airworthy PV-2 at one time, but they didn't have the $$$ to keep it flying so they sold it.

I had my hand on the X-14 in Feb. Rick also has a UH-1C, an Antonov, Stearman, Fleet, and an O2. The new place at Crawfordsville is beautiful and has a grass strip. The tanks, jeeps, and the PBR are already there.

Is this the new place?

Should the pointer move north, south, east or west? If so how far?

What Ropkey had was a P2V-Neptune. What the American Military Heritage Foundation has is a PV-2 Harpoon.

No, the new place is on the east side of Crawfordsville, Indiana. I found it but am map challenged and don't know how to extract the coordinates.

My bad...got my numbers/letters mixed up. I should have just said Neptune
Mike, the pointer is about right...for the old location, which is now a subdivision.
The new location is 5649 E. 150 North Crawfordsville, IN 47933. The satellite view seems abit older....I don't see the new buildings. When I was there alittle over a year ago, the aircraft weren't there. But the view looks right, it's in the middle of nowhere.....lots of room to expand!

To learn how to find the coordintes go to...

...and scroll down to...
"How do I use Google Maps to get coordinates?"
Thanks for the help. Street addresses are only approximations in Google.

Mike:

To find the Ropkey Armor Museum, take Interstate 74; either way, exit on HWY 32 and head EAST, for about 1/4 mile.
Make a (L) turn onto 550 EAST road.
Head (N) on 550E for about one mile until you come to a "T" intersection.
This will be 150N road.
Make a (R) turn here, and on the first driveway on your (R) is the entrance to the museum.. It is a white fence, there will be a house on your left, keep driving on the gravel road, and follow it for a very short distance to the museum
And these are the coordinates for the main building:
40 03'33.48" N
86 47'47.73" W
Saludos,
Tulio
