WIX Art Dept. - checkin' in ... :pirate

Small world dept ... the first painting below was done for WWII 4th FG pilot Cecil Manning by a fellow POW named "Erickson" or something like that. It's supposed to depict one of Cecil's engagements. Notice the accurate checkerboard nose!

Cecil's P-51 was shot down in March 44 by a golden BB from a Do 217 he was attacking. Cecil bailed out at low level with his plane on fire. "The only time you have too much gas!", he told me. I attended a couple of 4th FG reunions and since both of us were from Louisiana, we hit it off. His son Randy, a corporate pilot, sent me the image below after seeing my current JG 1 project. He gave me the news that his dad passed away last November. :(

Here's to you, Cecil! A gentle man who rode with the best ...

I was saving this one for my last post for this project showing the whole plane done, but what the heck ...
