Colonial Fly Corps Airshow (New Garden, PA) - Arrival Pics

Sun Jun 10, 2007 4:39 pm

The Colonial Flying Corps held their annual fund raiser air show today. I only attended a couple hours before the formal program. However, despite miserable lighting conditions, I managed a few decent arrival shots.

Nice work Jeff. That is one funky canopy on the PT-23.

Looks like Lex Dupont’s machine (?) Is he still flying? I have not seen him in years. I see it is still registered to him on the FAA site.

Nathan.

The FM-2 is Du Pont's. I don't believe I've seen it fly in a year or so. I don't know if it flew this afternoon. I saw Lex DuPont fly some of the trainers last year and taxi one this morning, so I assume he is probably still active.

Eric,

Believe it or not, all these pictures were taken with a Tamron 17-50 mm lens. Of course they're all cropped to the max, but I was standing pretty close to the runway.

Rats :x I missed this show again. Its not too far from Reading.

I take it this isnt very well advertised? I've never seen it listed anywhere...

Looks like some great stuff showed up.

I missed the Wildcat at the WWII weekend. Hopefully it will be there next year. Lex's Wildcat is one of my favorites due to its "weathered" appearance, looks like it just came back from a mission in the Pacific. 8)

TAdan,

This is a small local show that doesn't advertise much. I knew about it because it is local and I watch their website. This year, their hand lettered roadside signs didn't even show up until a couple of days before the event. They may occasionally advertise in the Wilmington (DE) News Journal, but I don't know if they did this year. If you're interested in attending, I suggest you watch their website. The show is usally the second or third weekend in June.

My pics show most of the warbirds that attended this year. There were a couple of PT-19/PT-26 and L-Birds that I didn't show. I was hoping Jim Beasley would bring Princess Elizabeth down, but it wasn't there when I left just before noon. He does bring one of his mustangs down occasionally.

Mostly local warbirds attend (Mid Atlantic Air Museum, Tom Duffy, Jim Beasley, Kevin Russo, etc). They also usually have a couple of good aerobatic acts. At least stunt flyer, Max Chapman, is based at New Garden.

If you are into photograhy, you'll be shooting into the sun when they're flying in the afteroon. I've gotten good static shots early though.

In my opinion, it is a nice little local show if you are in the area. I wouldn't normally recommend it for someone more than one or two hours away unless they understand it features a limited number of fighters and or bombers. They also have a number of nice antique cars and trucks on display.

Thanks a lot for the great pictures Jeff! I appreciate you including the pics of the two PT-23's. Do you have anymore of them?

Eric, I am not a big fan of the Rawdon canopy that was fitted post military life on a lot of PT's either, but it certainly doesn't do anything for the '-23's already "homely" looks.

I love the Wildcat shot!
