Looking for a B-24 picture

Sat Jun 09, 2007 12:45 am

I am looking for a picture of a particular B-24; location was ETO, and the airplane crashed, nose first into -possibly- English soil.

The airplane is mostly intact, with the obvious nose section damage; there was no fire, and if I recall correctly, all on board were killed.

Thank you, and saludos,

Tulio

Does anyone know the story behind this crash? Any ideas? I've seen this pic about a 1000 times.

That should be the 456th Bomb Group tail markings which would put the accident at Stornara, Italy. I've read a caption to this photo that suggests the brakes started dragging during the takeoff roll and the crew tried to abort without success. If memory serves it stated that six men perished. If I ever actually lay hands on the material I'll post it, but I believe this info is fairly accurate.

I'm not positive, but I don't think that was taken in the ETO at all. I believe it was taken at a training airfield at Walla Walla Washington state.
I've got the info around here some where. I'll do some checking.

Randune,

After reading your post, I think you may just be right. The 456th did use the diamond on the vertical but usually painted the bottom of the fin also. There was a tail marking scheme used in the CONUS Training Program that I've been trying to find the T.O. for, and the diamond on this B-24 could be a part of that system. Either way, brave men sacrificed all for their country.
