I was wondering, If let's say you have a rare plane for a project and have a buddy who is a retired AME and you have to satisfy the authorities regarding maintenance, does that means you have to have a person checking your a/c on annual who is an existing AMO or can it be a guy who did the work on those planes for the whole life as an AME and he is in a retirement now.
When you retire does this means you are no longer certified AME just because you are retired?
Thanks

Has long has he's active with the FAA and up-to-date with them there's
no problem. We've got a a retired NG O-6 who still does 2nd and 3rd class medicals here.

Jack,
wrong AME, He is in the UK, where a AME is the same as a A&P, here.
You would have to check the regs over there, here if you are not current, you must work under the supervision of a A&P until he feels you are safe to work on your own.

As long as he has a current AME license he is ok. If he let it expire he will have to get it back. In Canada, it depends on how long it has been expired. Might only involve paying the fee.
