B-29 In a Lake

Here is a interesting topic. I was speaking with a friend of mine from work and I got in to talking about warbirds as always and she started telling me a trip she had taken. She said that back in August of 1988 she had taken a trip up to Fairbanks Alaska. While she was there she said that her brother had taken her to a "lake" that had a "bomber" in it. 
This perked my interest! I began to ask her a few more questions about it and then she finally said to me that she had a video tape of her trip and the aircraft. I asked if I could borrow it and have a look. She said no problem. I finally got it and brought it home and took a look. The aircraft she was talking about was a B-29 that was sitting with it's nose, tail, and part of the right wing out of the water. A couple of things. First, I know that it is still out there. Second, I know that it did not crash there, someone parked it in the lake. Third, I know that it is located off from a runway. Fourth, I know that it is a "memorial". I guess what I am interested in is what is the story and history behind this B-29 and the S/N?????? Why is it a memorial in a lake????? How complete is it????? Has anyone ever tried to salvage this one at all??? I know that by throwing this out there that I have come to the right place. No one has got the answers like WIXer's do. So, come on guys give me the scoop.

Hey guys I just wanted to say THANKS A TON!!!!!! for all of the info. I LOVE it when I hear about warbirds out there that I never knew about previously. I love the fact that it seems that the WIXer's are the go to guys. They have the answers! Exactly, the information I was hunting for. I haven't been to Alaska yet. I am going to have to make a stop up there one of these days and have a look around

If you go to the base website they acualy have some details of the aircraft on it.
