Memorial Day

Fri May 25, 2007 2:48 pm

I want to wish you all a safe Memorial Day weekend. Lets never forget the sacrifice's made so that we can live in freedom. I salute & thank all of our fallen veterans that paid the ultimate price.
Robbie

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I also echo Robbie's statement...well spoken.

Although Memorial Day is now observed on the fourth Monday in May, in 1945 it was May 30th.

On May 30, 1945, my Dad, 1st. Lt. Doit L. Fish, USMCR, VMB-611 PBJ pilot, and his seven-member crew went MIA during a strike on the Kibawe Trail, near Davao, Mindanao, Philippine Islands, flying PBJ-1J "MB 11."

In November 1956, the aircraft wreckage and the skeletal remains of my father and his crew were discovered near where they were reported missing. A group burial of the eight Marines, with full military honors, was held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO on July 15, 1957.

In his memory and in his honor,
SEMPER FI

Have fun and be safe. I plan to honor those who fought for our freedoms, by having a cookout, and relaxing in the pool with friends and family.

Dave - in memory of your Dad and all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation, we will observe this weekend and May 30th.

Remember the true meaning of Memorial Day by taking time out for a moment of silence in respect of your family members who have passed away and for the patriots who have defended our country since 1776.
Albany Oregon has an excellent Memorial Day observance.
Thank You Veterans you are not forgotten.
Have a safe Memorial Day.

That's most affirm Dave. Today our fighting men and women need our support, maybe even more than ever.

.....“Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid, one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.”

Remembering our Military Service Members:

"...The American man-at-arms. My estimate of him was formed on the battlefield many, many years ago, and has never changed. I regarded him then as I regard him now--as one of the world's nobelest figures....His name and fame are the birthright of every American citizen. In his youth and strength, his love and loyalty he gave--All that mortality can give. He needs no eulogy from me or from any other man. He has written his own history and written it in red on his enemy's breast."

Remembering our past Enemies:

".....They asked no quarter and they gave none. They died hard--those savage men--not gently like a stricken dove folding its wings in peaceful passing, but like a wounded wolf at bay, with lips curled back in sneering menace, and always a nerveless hand reaching for that long sharp machete knife which long ago they substituted for the bayonet. And around their necks, as we buried them, would be a thread of dirty string with its dangling crucifix. They were filthy, and they were lousy, and they stank. And I loved them."

I just returned from the American Fighter Aces Reunion in Seattle. As always it was a fun and somber event. It is hard to imagine the the sacrifices made by these men and their generation. Both those that returned and those that didn't. I am blessed to know such men.
My generation and those that follow will be forever indebted to all our veterans. We must never forget.

Attended a very fitting memorial service at Madingley cemetary, Cambridgeshire UK this morning - shame the weather didn't play ball & grounded Sally B (B-17) and the F-15 missing man formation.

However a beautiful service with taps, buglers and bagpipes - the 3,811 who are buried there and the thousands more on the wall of the missing will be never be forgotten.

On Saturday my fiancee Ariane and I attended Memorial Day at Ardennes Cemetery Belgium together with a group from the AWON (American WWII Orphans Network). For some of them it was the first time to visit their father's grave...It was an emotional and touching ceremony.
