This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

As touched upon in the MB-5 replica thread, and just out of curiousity, how many P-51(D model only I guess, since the A/B/C/H are quite different) parts are there that aren't being made from new? I would have thought by now that things like doghouses, spinner backing plates, radiator cores/side plates, landing gear mounting trunnions (or whatever they are called), wing spars, propellor blades etc. could all be bought off-the-shelf or at least made to custom order. Obviously there are still parts that are not considered truly rare, like wheel hubs maybe (except for the CAC machines)?
cheers

Trunnions? Aren't they those little fish that come up to mate during a full moon?
Just kidding! Flugwerks is making new trunnions and Roush is making some engine stuff from what I have read. I know someone has to be making parts for these things since there can not be that much surplus stuff still left out there.

I'd be interested to know too. I'm sure most owner/operators have at least a mental list of those particular parts that make them stop and take notice whenever they find some available.

I believe that Flugwerk parts are only usable on aircraft certificated in the 'Experimental' category, so will probably be of limited use in the real world.

Shhhh.........don't let the cat out of the bag!!!
Actually, an owner or operator of an aircraft can manufacture, or have to be manufactured, parts for his aircraft in order to maintain the airworthiness of his aircraft.

Clam doors are rare a those that are about are expensive, original metal wingtips are scarce (plastic ones are available).
