Mass shooting today on campus... I feel sick

Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:51 am

Staying with my brother at Virginia Tech this week... there's been a mass shooting here this morning, with at least 22 dead. I know it's not the normal place for a message like this, but I needed to get it out. I still have friends in there that I haven't heard from. My brother teaches here... and it's turning my stomach. Thank goodness he is safe at least. This is awful...

Richard - I am glad that you and your brother are safe. This is very tragic news indeed. Our thoughts and prayers with those impacted.

Hang in there Richard...at least you're safe. I just read the breaking news on MSNBC and it sounds like the campus is still on lock-down so it may be awhile before people are able to leave and contact loved ones.

Another insane bastid with a gun. Just imagine what the "gun-grabbers" are gonna' do with this.

Mudge the shocked

Richard, I'm glad to hear you and your brother are ok... my sister-in-law lives in Christiansburg and works on campus at night, so she was thankfully unharmed as well. We don't know if we know any of the victims right now- this is just gut-wrenching.

And Mudge, yeah, I bet it'll become a political football, just like those two poor girls killed a couple weeks ago near here in Va Beach. Anything to advance an agenda... :(

A saddened and subdued Lynn

Thanks guys... and Lynn, I hope your sister-in-law's friends are ok.

I still can't beleive it. This is such a beautiful rural town. I've spent more than half my life in and around Blacksburg, and it just doesn't make any sense. I hope we find a reason for it, however warped it might be, it's better than not knowing.

Now they are saying 30+ dead. How sad.
I hate to see this turn into something political.

It turns my stomach to hear of anybody hurt or killed, but when they are my age it feels closer to home for me. Everyone at that campus is my thoughts and prayers.

This shouldnt on warbird forum firstly bbut in off topic area, but ... as i said on the gun topic debate one, america will never learn with it self until it bans guns.

We had 35 killed in australia in 1996 in a massacre and that changed our guns laws forever.

35 dead from 1 guy with a m16 and 30mins.

Now the shooting in US will have all the gun lover saying its only 1 person, but this style of killings happens every year i see new various dead, people in US will just keep on burying more dead and more dead and say its our right to carry guns.

Well if you all think it good to carry guns and blah blah you will be used to seeing death coniune on such a scale and impact many for YEARS to come.

One day your all gona have to bite the bullet and ban weapons and face it .. guns kill, people kill, no matter what....

how many more have to die until a US political consus is awake and understand one day it could be you or your freiend... only thewn will people see banning weapons as needed

Hi sabredriver,

Not much you can do. I personally believe in having firearms. But banning them is not the solution. What if a U.S. Marine went nutts and started shooting people on his/her base or out in public? You can't ban guns from the military.

They've already done it! On places like campuses, when the laws do not provide the right for the students to defend themselves, the Feds are 100% obligated to fill the resulting vacuum with adequate security. It's their job, since they're the ones also imposing the limit on personal defense rights. Either the citizen or the government has to be in place to properly maintain a healthy "boots on the ground" balance against the lawless criminal mind - especially in post-9/11 America. Funny how things like this almost always take place within an establishment that restricts only lawful minded citizens from defending themselves (i.e. schools, post offices, etc). It's always an institution!

The US having thousands of miles of freely accessible border is the reason why anyone in this country can easily obtain whatever they want, regardless of law or written restrictions. Drugs, weapons, etc - you name it (and your price) and there's a "mule" somewhere who'll be willing to raid the border and bring it over to you on his own back. The regulative requirements of a Socialist government may prosper on an island, but they cannot prosper when you're big fat and wide open to the entire surrounding continent! You'd have to plug the world's biggest leak before any cummulative positive effects could ever be felt as the result of any kind of ban like that in the USA.

I feel sorry for those that were affected by what happened today, but in all defence sabredriver, I have never heard of a gun killing anybody, it is a machined piece of metal, and is incapable of doing anything without a person operating it. I have about 25+ guns that date from the turn of the century to present day and I have never seen one get out of the safe and go kill someone.

We do have a god given and constitutional right to keep and bare arms, I am sorry you don't. More gun laws will not do anything excpet affect those that obey the laws. They took guns away from everyone (except the criminal) in the UK and Austrialia and look what happened there, crime went thru the roof, and there is even talk of trying to ban knives.

A criminal by definition does not obey laws. the killer broke untold number of laws just by taking a gun to the school, shows how effective they were.
