I love the yellow outline on the US Star on the closest B-25. It's not even all the way around.
And the next B-25 has the bars added to the stars.
I love shots like that showing the transition periods of the US insignia.
Thanks Jack.

Looks like the yellow surround was originally complete, until somebody sloppily applied some OD over the desert tan. I love those field-applied camo jobs..as a modeler, I can be as sloppy and non-standard as I want, and the rivet-counters and color-nazis can't say anything!

can anybody tell me if that is an extra 30 or 50 cal gun sticking out of the fuselage of the a/c nearest in the photo. look just above the shadow from the engine. I don't ever recall seeing this on any b-25's before?

I've seen B-25C/Ds with guns in waist windows before..I think it was one of the many Mitchell armament field mods. Maybe to help cover the area formerly defended by the deleted belly turret. I've also seen them with the tail obervation blister removed and a single .50 fitted in the opening.

I understand when they first turned B-25s into strafers in the Pacific by packing the nose full of guns, they also put a .50 in each wing landing light bay. When some North American engineers saw the mod, they turned white, saying the wings were never meant to take that kind of pounding, and the crews were lucky they hadn't fallen off! Needless to say, the wing guns were quickly removed.
