This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Just thought I would post this picture for those who know of the Carolina Mars. My Grandfather George Maude traded a local man an Item that the man wanted for this cut up piece of the Carolina mars. And he still have the piece. Here it is.

I certainly don't mean to question anyone's integrity, but are you sure that's actually a piece of the Mars? The panel doesn't seem to match the photo of the plane. It looks like it may be smaller as well, although there's nothing in the photo of the panel to judge the scale.

Exactly what I was thinking, Steve.
The panel in the photo can't be more than 4-5 feet long, judging from the pieces of OSB it's mounted on.
Things just don't add up.

This is a really poor photo:

But if you look closely, you can see that 'Caroline Mars' ended up aft of the cockpit towards the end of it's service.
I know this piece has been researched and is 100% authentic.

Hi,
Remember that not all planes always have the same paint scheme. Take the Maude P-40 for example, it was first a two tone airplane, then it had a camouflage scheme, and then it was removed of all paint and kept as the silver aluminum finish. So lets say that picture was taken a few years before the plane was scrapped. Its most likely that the BU number and the logo near the beginning of the lettering was removed. And the fact that the piece is slightly faded could also be from sun light.

so heres why the markings are gone on the piece of metal. The Canadians bought the Caroline Mars, the markings where removed because they were moved from the USA to Canada. The Carline Mars was stationed at Patricia Bay BC. and a taxing Hurricane accidentally clipped one of the guide wires holding the Mars in place. As a result the wings or fuselage were bent and it was determined that the plane was not salvageable. So the Mars was cut up, a local man got a hold of the piece reading "Caroline Mars" and had it for some time till George Maude traded him a few items for the Piece.

???
I think you mean it was damaged by Hurricane Freida -- a windstorm, not the Hawker fighter.
BTW, the Capital Iron store in Victoria has a Caroline Mars nose panel, with the name on it, much like the one in your photo. Is it the same piece, or are there two? (One from each side?)

Mark's right, the hurricane was in 1962. Nice piece of memoribilia though. BTW, has your Dad found that Hurricane he's been searching for?

Could the aircraft have had the name painted on it in more than one location?

Yes, in fact ive seen the nose and the name. Im not sure which side this piece is from, but the name was on both sides of the nose for sure.

Thanks for the info, Glann. I thought the salvaged panel might be from a later repaint or something. Like I said, I didn't want to insult anyone, just wanted some clarification.
Oh, and your Kittyhawk site looks great!
