Warbirds Wanted for Fly-In - Central Florida - Feb. 17, 2007

Wed Jan 24, 2007 10:37 am

Hi All,

We are having a fly-in/open house type of event on Saturday, February 17 at the Valkaria Airport (X59) - this is on the Florida Space Coast, right between the Melbourne and Sebastian airports), known as the Valkaria Air Fest & Open House. We are looking for any and all types of unusual aircraft to display for the day to help get the public excited about aviation and their local airport. (By unusual, we're talking about anything but a dirty white rental C-150... this would include warbirds, homebuilts, ultralights, PPCs, balloons, blimps, helicopters, gyros, light-sport aircraft, Cubs, rocket belts, magic flying carpets, etc.) The purpose of the event is to showcase general and recreational aviation to the local community in all its many forms.

We would really like to see a good turnout of warbirds of any and all types, from L-birds up through fighters and medium bombers as folks are obviously (and rightly) fascinated by the machines that keep us free.

Just to keep this post more related to warbirds, our honored guests are the Tuskegee Airmen, who will have a booth. Some of the Original Airmen will be there to talk to folks, if you've never had the chance to talk to one of these heroes, I HIGHLY recommend taking any opportunity you get to meet them. Every gentleman from this group I've ever met has proven to be fascinating to talk to and quite interested in sharing their unique experiences... if there was ever a story that represented the American spirit of rising above adversity, the Tuskegee Airmen have lived it. We truly are honored to have these folks participating in our humble little event.

The Valkaria Air Fest is free to attend and goes from 8AM to 9:30PM, with a variety of activities and demos. For you pilots, Valkaria has the cheapest gas within 75 miles, and pilots flying in with a display aircraft will get free food. We'll also have a couple of raffles, one of which is for a portable NAV/COM. (If you'd like to fly in, please check the NOTAMs for info on runway changes/closures for the event.)

Before anyone asks, I'll say up front that we can't offer much in the way of hotel accommodations or appearance fees or free fuel (if you have a REALLY exotic plane, let me know and we'll talk) as we are a smallish EAA chapter without a huge budget... but we think it'll be a fun and worthwhile place to take a trip to for a day. (You have to fly some to stay current anyway, right?) :)

Thanks, and whether by land or by air, we hope to see some of you there!
