The Last Corsair

Mon Jan 22, 2007 3:20 pm

I may be wrong but I believe this was the last active duty US Corsair.

I think it would be neat to see one painted up like that.

By the way Jack, check your PM's please.

Anybody knowwhat happened to it? Sometimes the services will keep the last active duty of a type.

Jack what date would that photo be dated?

What variant is that? I'm no Corsair expert, but it looks to be a -5 or -7, but without the prominent "cheek" intakes under the cowl.

Having paid my dues cleaning and ruining many articles of clothing keeping Max Chapman's F4U-4 clean and shiny, I pity the person that would have to keep up with a white Corsair. After a day of Corsair cleaning I would hug the Mustang as I left the hanger and cry when after a 15 mins flight it was back to square with the ole Corsair ! That being said, AWESOME aircraft !

All we need is a AU-1 to paint up like that. To bad there are none flying or on display anywhere.

Very cool pictures!

Cockpit is set further back than in an A-1, but otherwise it looks pretty much the same!

I have never seen a Corsair painted like that, it seems either silver or off white and looks good. Re Skyraper cleanliness, Jay Cullum of Dallas and CAF had a Mustang( now in Denver) and a T-34 and he was fastideous about keeping them clean. Then he bought an AD. It took about a week or two to cure him and readjust his standards of cleanliness. His motto then became "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that his paint looked just as good as everyone else, it just had a protective coating over it.

When I was a youngen in the 60's I had a Linberg Model Corsair fhat came with very simular color and markings in the painting and decals.

My favorite Corsair scheme! I have seen photos of NAS Olathe and NAS Seattle F4U-4 Corsairs in the gull gray over white scheme, along with a couple of MCAS Quantico AU-1's. I built Heller's AU-1 Corsair in 1/48 scale...terrible kit and VERY inaccurate, but at least it's a likeness.

I like to refer to it as being "externally lubricated"
