Typically, what color are fuel tanks in B-24s or B-25s? Were they by chance red, since AN fittings are blue or red?

Like Tim said it should be self sealing black rubber.
@Tim from Belgium why this response? Tim asked a serious question.

AN fittings came out after WWII. The common flared fitting then was the AC fittings, which were gray in color. Fuel supply systems didn't traditionally use flared fittings either, they used beaded piping and hose couplings and hose clamps. This was common with the fuel bladder equipped aircraft.

Actually, the military adopted the AN standard in the early 1930's, but with the 3A/3B thread and were also known as JIC fittings. Later, in 1947 I think, the standard was updated to the 2A/2B thread and was also adopted as an SAE standard with it's own number.
Parker has a nice little history of the standard on one of their websites.

Funny thing is not all were Black! Some were a tan/gray color almost silver. Have tanks to prove it and many pics. Yes these were the self sealing type and no they were not faded because the stenciling was in black ink.
Great question!
Details are fun and love it when know-it-all's prove that they have lot learn! (Fouga23)
