Hello folks
Can anybody help with regards to the correct grey used on C-47s for the Unit Codes (J8 in the pic) and Aircraft Code on the tail (Z in the pic)?
I had been led to believe that they were painted using 'Neutral Gray' but I have my doubts now, any help will be greatly appreciated.

You might want to try the book, USAAF Aircraft Markings and Camouflage, 1941-1947, by Robert D. Archer & Victor G. Archer. It has some great information in it.

I have seen them painted in so many different colors, it would be nice to see what the right color is

"So many different colors" is most likely the right color! If the grey looks too light to be Neutral Gray in photos, a good bet would be RAF Medium Sea Grey, which was easy to come by on bases in the UK.

Thanks for all the help lads, I'll have a look for a copy of the book Gary and I liked the point regarding the possible use of MSG from the RAF stocks, I'm going to have a close look at the shots in Roger Freeman's '9th AF in colour' to see if there's anything useful to be picked up in there.
