F4U "Fighting 17" pencil study ...

Hi guys,
If you've been paying attention, this one has been an unusual project for me ... I did a small color study first using no tonal refs for the background other than my imagination:
5.25 x 7 inches:
I was tempted to proceed with the final painting from there - after all, I had the tones and colors down, right? Well ... not exactly. I felt "comfortable" with the Corsair itself, but less than confident with the cloud shapes. Sooo, I went backwards and did a pencil study. The goal was to concentrate on my cloud shapes and basic tones, not detail per se (that will come later on the final canvas):
9.75 x 12.5 inches:
NOW, I can start work on the final canvas, pulling the 'best' tones and colors from the studies above.
I do plan on publishing this painting as a strictly limited edition of 100 prints with a custom remarque option. Go here for pre-order discount details: http://wademeyersart.tripod.com/id78.html

Good call. The pencil is much more dynamic.
