CAF Dixie Wing P-63A Update

CAF Dixie Wing member and marketing guy Mo Aguiari posted this video clip on his website http://www.Warbirdnews.com
It is an update on the Dixie Wing Kingcobra.... This aircraft has been a "long time coming", but there is light at the end of the tunnel... The Dixie Wing has also been making regular posts on Facebook concerning the P-63 and all wing events...

No, no, no....it's not supposed to have the rear window. LOL

I hope that it is given some 'accurate' Free-French Air Force markings and some appropriate 'Tumbleweed' nose art.

Hey Speedy.....from what I have been told (by my in-house snitch), the Free French markings and several other possible schemes were discussed.... I have not been told what the final decision will be.... however, the artwork shown on the video clip may be the ultimate hint....

Alan, is this the same P-63 that flew with the French markings years ago? I heard it was out front of Love Field for many years before that. I first saw it fly back in the early 70's at San Marcos, Texas. There are some great photo's of it back in the days in the hallway at the Sugarland FBO going back towards the pilots lounge...

What is the military history of the airframe? Did it ever serve with the French Air Force?

No, it is a former Bell and NACA test aircraft with no military history.

Frank Borman's P-63 is a great example of just how fantastic the aircraft can look in (well researched) factory markings and details - nothing fanciful or whimsical (just looking "bad a$$"). No matter the choice on paint scheme, the work that has gone into the rebuild of the aircraft is absolutely impressive, and I have enjoyed following along with the updates. I really look forward to seeing the aircraft flying when completed - it will become the fourth example flying in the world today (pretty awesome number, considering the rarity of the type!).

Not a thing. I think it should look exactly like that. It would be a great companion to CAF's P-63F. Over the last few years with many restorations reaching tremendous authenticity, I like seeing warbirds finished in a scheme that is true to the airframe such as Taigh PV-2 and the FM-2s of Jerry Yagen and WIX's Conrad.

Warbirders:
Today, for the first time in over 40 years both wings are bolted to the center section. The goal is by Saturday to have it on the ground and off the jacks. If you are in the area stop by or just watch our facebook page.

As for the paint job and nose art, we will have to see,

There was a P-51D that had been an ex NACA bird at Oshkosh. It was restored in silver with the yellow and black NACA logo on the tail. I would submit that a similar scheme would look great on this aircraft. A) If the Russians and Free French, Hondurans want it painted in their scheme, let them rebuild one and sponsor it.B) The NASA logo would attract more airshows and Base Open Houses where NASA is more popular and politically correct than a "War " paint scheme., IMO
