US Naval air forces struck a sledgehammer blow against Japan's navy by sinking 4 of their first line carriers. This was not a matter of luck, but extreme skill, perseverance, and accuracy by US Navy dive bombers.

Not sure why this is on a humor site, but...

Even as an 8 year old kid watching 'Navy Log' and 'Victory at Sea' (great! Now Richard Rogers theme music is stuck in my head! :| ) I knew that Pearl Harbor wasn't bombed by SBD Navy dive bombers

It's funny, I often think of a WWII film I saw some time ago, about the attack on Midway (not "the Battle of Midway") in which one of the characters playing a Marine--I remember he wore one of those dishpan WWI helmets--said something like, "Boy, those Grew-min fighters sure saved our bacon."

The only point being that even in 1943, or whenever the script was written, Hollywood hadn't yet learned how to pronounce Grumman. And 30 years later, a Grew-min Tomcat was one of their biggest stars ever.

That's because they always use the same bits of recycled footage from the John Ford film "December 7," in which some SBDs stood in for Japanese bombers. The average person can't tell an SBD from a cheeseburger. Heck, when we were discussing the new film about MacArthur recently, someone pointed out that "obviously" some of the cars were from two or three years after the time period depicted..I would have had no idea, as I'm an airplane *g.e.e.k but know jack about cars.
