Hello,

A while back I mentioned that a relative gave me about a dozen photo from an airshow my great uncle Don and great uncle Niel. Both served as mechanics in the marine corps during WWII. My uncle Don(still with us) worked on PV-1's, SNB's, and PBJ's. While my great uncle Niel worked on SBD's and F7F's. The only family members I have that served in avaition during WWII. They both both met up in the marines and both ended up marrying sisters. Here are a few photos of them visiting an airshow. No idea what year. But here they are:

This photo is of interest. It is of a different formate then the others and I am thinking this might have been a shot of a SBD my uncle took that he used to work on. Pretty cool, huh?


I have a few other photos of close up shots. Others are of flying shots but the planes are mostly specks.

Thanks for posting. I like the C-124 the best. It is an early "A" model with the round tip props. Who is standing by the landing gear?

My uncle Niel I think is standing by the C-124.

Thanks for posting these, Nathan! The shot of the H-34 would date from around 1973 or '74, as the two newest cars in the background - a Chevy Nova on the far left and a Pontiac sedan below the starboard landing gear - indicate.

Thanks very much for that. The SBD camouflage scheme appears to be an example of an early interpretation of the Navy tri-color one that began to be used in January 1943. I have dubbed it the Norfolk scheme for the rework/repair facility where existing airplanes in the prior two-color scheme would have been repainted. The ID on the side is probably yellow and indicative of an airplane being used by an operational training squadron.

Can you tell if the national insignia has red bars?

I am guessing it might have been taken during the flood from Hurricane Agnes in 1972. I wasn't born yet but it was and still is the talk of the towns around my area. Really bad flooding and this photo is perhaps taken from around my area during that time period. I see sand bags and that is why I am coming up with this theory also the area is also familiar with where my uncle Don used to live at.
