On behalf of my fellow (former) Marines, Leathernecks, Devil-Dogs, Jarheads, WMs, and BAMs, I accept these birthday felicitations, and I will presently go off to hoist a few in honor of the Corps.

Here's health to you and to our Corps,
Which we are proud to serve.
In many a fight we've fought for life,
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy ...

Ah hell, never mind about that, you Army and Navy folk. Come and hoist one with us!

When I went into the military, after basic, I was sent to Rantoul, Illinois which is a pretty grey and depressing place in the winter time.

Had I been in Hawaii, there are things I would have missed still, but I bet I would have had a somewhat more positive attitude toward the military.

My friend John Reynolds, ex U S Navy, flew for the FAA after the Korean War. He was stationed in Hawaii and his job was to fly an FAA DC-3 around to the different airports and runways in order for the technical people onboard to check the instrument approach facilities.

He thought that was a pretty nice position.

An enlisted buddy of mine, now retired Lt. Col. John Wehner USMC ret. was a senior when I started college. I went to his graduation where he got to pin on his "butter bars " He also found out his first duty station was going to be Hawaii. He got married after graduation and was pretty stoked. I repeated the scuttlebutt that"Hawaii is a bad place for junior enlisteds and officers because the living expenses are so high they say you will always be broke."
He looked at me and said "darn jarhead, can you think of a better place on the planet to live if you are broke!!"
The closest I ever got to being a Marine officer is when we would take the pull tabs off of those old style beer cans and fold them over my PFC insignia. Thus looking like a shiny new first lieutenant. I would then walk into the barracks when the guys were sitting around in their skivvies on a typical boring weekend. I would pull my cammy cover down to the bridge of my nose and standing very stiff and officer-like come walking into the squad bay yelling "OFFICER ON DECK!"
Bodies would go flying everywhere as people jumped to attention. I would briskly exit and with a booming voice shout "Carry On." On about the third or fourth time pulling this stunt someone recognized me and they all clobbered me!
