Hello everyone! I've lurked for a while and have finally singed up. Awesome site.

I've got a Allison V-1710 question. I collect warbird relics (wife calls it "junk"). Pistons, cylinders, gauges, anything related. I've found someone selling what they say is a V-1710 piston. I have no reason to either believe or doubt them, but he isn't an enthusiast, just an antique dealer that is going off what he was told by the guy he got it from. I searched for a couple hours on the internet and didn't really come up with anything to compare it to. I've got one picture of me holding a piston from Glacier Girl at an airshow, and it's not the same as this one is. But, Glacier Girl was an early enough model I wonder if the piston desings could have changed along the way explaining the minor differences. So... does anybody have a picture of an Allison piston laying around?

Is there a part number on the underside of the piston?

If there is, it should be easy to look it up.

Thanks for the reply. He first said there were no numbers, then two days later I just heard from him again and he was able to find a part number. He found 27056G and 276. A search engine search on the number came up dry. Do these numbers mean anything to anybody?

Greg

That does help. This picture shows one of their new pistons next to one of the old ones. The old one on the right is the same as the one in my Glacier Girl picture.

The one the guy is selling has valve reliefs on top and the area around the wristpin is different.

How many valve reliefs? An Allison has 4 valves per cylinder in a wedge head shape where a radial has two valves in a hemispherically shaped combustion chamber.

Great point, I didn't think of that. This one has two valve reliefs, and they're towards the centerline of the piston, not where they would be if it was out of a four valve engine.
