I'm surprised it made it back with the elev jammed down like that.

Not an issue! notice the tabs and the right hand elevator are also down.
With the control cables disconnected the surfaces will follow mom nature and obey the laws of gravity.

Hmmm,
I am guessing that the IB ends are down because the cables are disconnected, the OB end is up because the counterweight is heavier than the 1/3 of the elevator it is attached to. My $.02

Either way, it would have been realy licky for it to tear and not jam at the hinge lines.

It looks like only the tail section is there and I would say it is more likely this shot taken at a boneyard.

You can see the tail section is removed & sitting on a cradle assy. Probably more damage to the tail, & aircraft than just whats visible. Just my 2 cents.
Robbie :?

Either that or a really big baseball bat!

Well the reasoning behind my $.02 cents was that it looked like more of a T-33 fuselage then a F-80. Ok, ok, I know both are about the same but the colors, the coding, the serial all smacked T-33. And as far as I can remember no T-33's got shot down by migs. So thats why I opted to guess a boneyard.

How do you know the cables were disconnected?
