What is interesting is that this is from 1933, so predating any serious design work on suicide aircraft (or torpedoes/submarine/kaiten) by ten years.

In reality, the Japanese did not need consideration of suicide bombs early in the war because their pilots were so good. Their naval dive-bombing and horizontal bombing accuracy - at Pearl Harbor, in the Indian Ocean and against the Yorktown at Midway - were far superior to anything that we ever achieved anytime during the war. Basically, 50% accuracy against moving targets, while under fire. Absolutely amazing!

Yeah, but acknowledging that early in the war would have broken the myth we were trying to create for propaganda. I find this disgusting, really.

All part of the jingoism of the times, unfortunately. As for the racism against Japanese vs. Germans, Most Americans are of European ancestry (a lot of them Germanic) so it was harder to demonize them on a racial level. But the Japanese were noticably different both racially and culturally, making them much easier targets of derision and ridicule.

I was watching a show about Ted Giesel awhile back (better known as Dr. Suess.) In addition to his wonderful children's books, he also did some horribly racist political cartoons on the subject of Japanese Americans, who at the time were being packed off to internment camps. Everybody, individuals as well as nations, has a dark side..the important thing is to acknowledge it and not let it dictate your actions. I grew up in the all-white rural midwest, and still get uncomfortable around black people..but I realize that's about me, not them.
