I was wondering if some one on these forums could identify the yellow P-38 in this picture. It was taken at NAS Point Mugu in the late 60's to early 70's. I know the yellow Mustang next to it is Bob Hoovers.

My only suggestion is that it is Larry Blumer's N74883. It was painted up as the "Bardahl Lightning" at Abbotsford in 1968, flown by Chuck Lyford. I have seen a b/w photo of it displaying, but thought it was white. When looking at this plane which also have the stock gun-nose, I think it might be this plane. If anyone was there in 68, do you remember?

The registry shows 44-26961(listed as in storage with the Planes Of Fame) as having had the registration N74883. Though if there was another P-38 with the same registration, it wouldn't be the first time.

My guess is that some of these parts went into the rebuild of Stephen Grey's P-38.

I am a little unsure if the registry is correct here. Or the Directory for that matter... The Directory list it as being with Les Friend in 1988. Then to PoF in 1993. In about 1990/91 I received a photo of it (remains) in store at Weeks facility, and I'm not certain it has left there yet. Maybe Kevin can help out here. Do you know if John Deahl ever had the plane repainted before its crash? It was pretty bare when at Madera in 1979!

It was silver much like it looked when it was used in the Tommy Jones Howard Hughes Movie. Don't have the N number infront of me, but it was sliver. Much of the wreckage went to Kermit Weeks.

Which film is this, and why haven't I seen it??? Also, is this one and the "Hotshots" episode of Black Sheep available anywhere?

So, this is not the red and white P-38 on display at the Fantasy of Flight restoration shop facility?
How did this P-38 crash and what remains were left of it? I am curious if anyone has an idea of where Kermit might be keeping it in storage.

The yellow P-38L is indeed N74883, 44-26961, ex FAH 504, then N74883, then N38DH and finally N6961. It crashed on take off from Salt Lake City, April 9, 1981, killing the pilot/owner, John Deahl.

Well, well, Dick Phillips. A photo of N74883 in the yellow colors. Have you been holding out on me??? Interesting to see that the plane doesn't have yellow wings, and an olive??? anti glare panel. Where is it shot?

No, the red/white plane is Bob Kucera's old photo mapper that was stranded in Paraguay until 1974, when Bob Diemert rescued it. Kermit Weeks got it around 80-81, and has it in storage for the moment. N6961 crashed on take-off from Salt Lake City when some rubberized fabric got lodged in right engine. Not sure if the plane flipped upside down before hitting the ground.
