Warbird Information Exchange

My fascination with aircraft is almost as old as I am.

First it was the P-40 and B-17. Didn't live near an airport or a place to see them. So, I had to badger my parents to take me to see them whenever possible. Once, I got them to make a several hundred mile detour (in my mom's new Gremlin)to see the Memphis Belle when she was at the National Guard Armory in Memphis. And the vacation on Padre Island had to include a trip to the CAF in Harlingen.

Many times I have been to a museum and didn't have a camera, or enough film to take all the pictures I wanted to. There are also many museums I would like to see, but time, obligations and funds bring limitations.

Some museums are no longer around and collections at others have changed over the years.

So, how about sharing?

The folks at the CAF were super nice and I spent a lot of time there.

The CWAM is located at the Lancaster airport on the opposite end of the hangers from the DFW CAF.

My guess is that the Cold War Air Museum is relatively new and mostly a flying museum. It is only open on Saturdays from 10-4. And there isn't much in the way of signage. If you don't already know it is there, you won't find it.

The kid that was there was knowledgeable, friendy and helpful (sorry, but I forgot his name), but only one of the three hangers was accessible. There was an almost ready to fly Hind, a Mig-23, Mig-21, three other Mi-2's and some more L-39's in the other hangers.

I first found out about the place here. When somebody mentioned how one of their Hind's was damaged when it hit a bridge (it was on a regular flatbed trailer instead of a lowboy). It is now with the DFW CAF.
