Can we get more people like him elected into politics everywhere? This man speaks with reason and I hope that this case is resolved in favor of the Billings, it would definitely set a precedent from which other cases could be argued, especially some long-standing cases out here in BC.

No kidding warbirdcrew. That councilor sounds like a really good and honest person. Some might say with judgment like that, he doesn't belong in politics, but others might say there needs to be more.

In any case.... Dan Diemer, if you read this and you find yourself in Vancouver, get in touch with me and I'll buy you a beer.

Anyways, I wish them good luck in sorting out the situation.

Yea, no kidding! What an awesome guy! Unfortunately, here in the States, you would be hard pressed to find anyone like that on the city council or any office. They would just use this little thing we call "Imminent Domain" and take the airstrip. The U.S. government has used Imminent Domain to oust many people unwillingly from their homes and property because they can. It's usually due to either commercial development, or infrastructure development, like highways, schools, airports, etc. Though Imminent Domain has it's place, it seems like it's been abused a lot lately.

Do you Canucks have anything similar to our Imminent Domain?

S: Took hammer away from midget.

That would be 'eminent domain' (The correct name just helps with finding it.) Apparently 'expropriation' is the Canadian term, 'compulsory purchase' in the UK. It's a basic principle in law, vital in times of war. (The development of the railways or indeed roads around the world would've been crippled without it.)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eminent_domain

Most W.W.II British airfields, including those of the Mighty Eighth would have been obtained on this basis. Fair enough, I'm sure we'd agree, in war, but one could argue that there are still too many airfields that should've been returned to farmland long since, however misty-eyed we might be about their history.

Neither am I, really. Much training and 'correction' from the wife. ;) I spent an hour trying to research something yesterday without luck as I'd misremembered the place name. Funny that I couldn't find it...
