Has anybody heard any news from Galveston ? or for that matter Ellington Field ? I Work for H-E-B Food stores and the early reports out of Galveston is that our Store is Severely Damaged ! However our store close to NASA (near Ellington Field ) is up and running today. One can only hope that their was very little lose of life .

P.S HEB to date has shipped in over 40 trucks full of relief of (Free) ICE, WATER, and BREAD, to the Galveston and other areas on the Coast , And more is coming ASAP .

I just talked to RickH in Houston. He has gone from his home over to Ellington Field. He has reported that there have been some roof panels blown off some of the hangars, but the majority of the hangars did not sustain major damage. The guppy hangar that is a "temporary" structure built on the ramp did not fair too well, but most of the structures did not suffer more than the rain gutters being torn off. Ellington Field had its power back yesterday, but where Rick lives is still without power.

As for Galveston, Rick said that even the local media is not saying much. Most if not all of the island was under water at some point, so it is pretty safe to say that there is not too much that stayed dry. They said on the news here in New England that it may be several weeks before they allow people to cross the causeway to see what is left.

On the TV news broadcasts we've been watching from Houston I gather that the causeway actually has structural damage that has to be repaired before much traffic can be allowed across.

Right before the causeway the southbound lanes of I-45 are blocked by debris and wrecked boats.

From a helicopter fly over video I pulled of the KHOU 11 website it looks like the Roof at LSFM is intact but could not tell much else. The video was taken Saturday afternoon and the airport was still mostly underwater. Looked like a bunch of white tanks from the fuel farm were floating around so the water was still fairly deep at that point.

From this mornings reports it sounds like the weather is finally cooperating and teh water is noticeably lower. I am sure you are all just as anxious as I am to find out what is going on inside the hanger.

Yesterday museum Pres. Larry Gregory posted a msg. to Lone star people. He said that as soon as LSFM staff could get in they would asess the damage and let everyone know what the next move is.
The good news is that all Lone Star members who have checked in directly or indirectly are safe.
And ten aircraft got out. But beyond the basic fact of the tidal flood, all we can do is speculate and make our selves sick.

I fear that the longer it takes for anyone to get back to the collection the more damage will be done as the salt water takes its toll

George- You are correct - the Balinese, Murdocks, and the Hooters are completly gone. In fact all the piers are gone or only a gutted shell remaining with the exception of the Flagship, and that still took some pretty serious damage.

Now that I am in Maryland and have to sit by and watch what my friends are going through withough being able to do anything I think I can begin (and only begin) to understand the phenomenon of "Survivors Guilt." This has been so hard to watch and I am lucky enough to be safe and secure with AC and Electricity.

I know that much has been written in the past regarding monetary donations to various causes- and if ever there was a time to step up and help out your community this may be it. As some of you have seen from my past posts and rants LSFM has done okay but is not rolling in dough or by any means financially independent and relies on the hard work of the volunteer who are now faced with ther own crisis over the next several months.. On a personal note - and this does not come from anything I have heard - I fear that this may be to much for the museum to overcome. While there is much discussion about the aircraft don't forget about all the little stuff that has added up over the years- things like the mechanics tools, ground support vehicles, maintenance equipment for hte building itself, all of which I can only guess are trashed( or at best will never be the same)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE- I encourage everyone out there to chip in and help out in any way possible. Hopefully the museum will set up a PO box in the near future to allow us to send in whatever we can afford to help get it back on its feet.

THANKS
Steve S (very sad former Crew Chief LSFM Thunderbird)

Well guys...This just about makes me sick as I right this,

I called and spoke to a very reliable source from the museum to check on him and his family, they are ok but the rest of the news is very grim! They were able to get down to the Island via helicopter and get inside and survey the inside of the museum. There was at least six foot of water or more inside the museum. And things are almost a total wash out. I dont know how much of the TAHF stuff was moved upstairs before the storm but in the hall of fame there is nothing left. I was told it looks like an empty storage closet. Due to the high water and wave action the B-58 took some damage to a wing. It looks like the Hurricane, Spitfire and F3 can be salvaged. The AT-11 remained in the hangar as well and Im not sure about the fate of the rest of the aircraft. The gift shop even took on water and it is higher than the hangar floors...

Doubble Dam :x
It was a real mother of a storm !
At least the building is still in the same location. I understand that the Train Museum on the far East side really took it on the chin even having Steam Engines knocked off their tracks  I send my thought s and prayers to all the Folks on the Coast / Houston .

The news from the island is not encouraging in many ways. It will be a while before that town returns to normal.

I found this current satellite photo on line.

Scholes Field - The F-100 is still there. Lots of airplanes thrown about.

Ow. Me not like that photo! We have a Bonanza from Scholes at our FBO as well as a Cessna from Houston. I wish some of those folks would've been able to get those GA planes out - looks like they're pretty battered. I'm fairly confident that there would've been some willing ferry pilots up here if there'd been a call...
I bet those photos were taken by the CAP planes we're supporting here.
