Does anyone know what the reason is behind the small "L" bracket and pointer mounted on the aft fairing over the tail turret @ approximately 12 O'Clock? :?

<Obligatory "Gary's Not Gonna Like This">

Sorry, didn't mean to make light of the fate of the LBG's crew. Those are really haunting pics.

Now there's a set of waist gunners doors for Gary to use on Ole 927. Just gotta go to Tobruk to get them. Or would that be Taboo or at the least weird?

Actually, the SanDiego Air & Space Museum let us borrow a waist gunner's door for me to copy, but since it wasn't for an "A" model B-24 (Like ours was originally built as), the curvature was wrong. You see, our doors hinge at the bottom, swinging down. All B-24's after the "A" model had their floor lowered a bit and the waist gunner's doors were hinged at the top, like you see in the pictures above. Just a little useless trivia for you. I kinda found that type of stuff out the hard way, while working on 927.

Thanks for posting those, by the way.

Gary

I wish she could be placed into some kind of diorama somewhere, instead of at a storage yard.

Let your imagination run wild....just think what is still out there in the desert yet to be uncovered or discovered. Spits, P-40's, Hurricanes, Italian Iron, 109s, Stukas.... Wish we had access....

Wasn't there a story about somebody robbing some bits of her for other aircraft and each one of them crashed?
Or is that another aviation urban myth? There are hunderds of them!

If you have a US passport, you might have just a little trouble getting a visa. :)

Libya is a "friendly" nation now! Let's start a campaign to Bring Her Home!

As to the desert uncovering secrets, about 10 years ago the sands in North Africa shifted, and a nice WWII 30CWT Chevrolet truck belonging to the (British) Long Range Desert Group (RDG) was found where it had been abandoned, as though it had been parked there the previous day! It is now in some British museum...
