I'm very interested to hear from anyone who might have old
articles of any description or insider knowledge on the
aircraft from Capricorn One? i.e. Stearman, Hughes 500s
and Learjet?

i can't help you with the info you need, but i'm interested in why do you need it?? that was a great movie, though it got bad reviews from the general public. i'd bet most wixers like the pic though!!

"In 1977 David Butler and J. David Jones brought in some of the top pilots for Peter Hyams' film 'Capricorn One'. Frank Tallman doubled as Telly Savalas in a Stearman which eluded government helicopters through Redrock Canyon. Butler asked me to build him a platform that would enable him to sit outside a Hughes 500 with a Continental Mount and shoot straight forward or back. This, the first 'Outside Mount', worked perfectly for the chase sequences and added realism to the action. In addition to Tallman, Jones brought in Art Scholl¹, a national champion aerobatic pilot, and the legendary Clay Lacy, with his Learjets and Continental Camera's Astrovision System. If you haven't seen 'Capricorn One', rent a copy. Its a classic aerial adventure film, and a fine display of David Butler's work."

I got this dvd strictly for the flying. It also proves OJ was a much better actor later in life.
Tallman supposedly snapped the Stearman over the edge of the cliff during the chase. Lacy landed the Lear in a trench dug in the desert to make it appear to be a belly landing. If you really like helicopter chases get a copy of 'Birds of Prey' with Davis Janson. Great flying. There's a P-40 in it too.

I saw it at the theater, it had great flying.

As mentioned Davcid Jones was the aerial unit cordinator...he did lots of films and TV, he was also the aerial director for Airwolf.

George Nolan is also listed as a helicopter pilot. The Internet Movie Database entry on the film says one of the helicopter pilots was killed shortly after making the film. I wonder if it was Nolan?

Art Scholl, Frank Tallman, Clay Lacey....Jones...can't get any better than that. It was one of Tallman's last projects.

I recently met Clay Lacy, a very nice guy. I wish he'd write a book, he's done it all, airline & charter flying, air racing, films, and has about 54,000 flying hours.

My favorite helicopter chase was a made for T.V. movie, Deadly Encounter (1982) with Larry Hagman. The first clip shows a Harpoon in the background when the chopper takes off.
