Hi ALL,

I was wondering if anyone might have any pictures of a N2S with a canopy enclosure. I just got some parts for one of these enclosures. The data plate says

NAVY N2S ENCLOSURE
contract N288S-17583
Manufactured by
PIPER AIRCRAFT CORP
Lock Haven Penna
serial # 361

Interestingly that canopy was widely regarded as a failure on the Stearman. It largely blanked out the rudder and fin (a stock Stearman has terrific rudder authority.) There was only one PT-27 actually fitted with it although the USN used it for a short while before they too tossed it. They were manufactured by Piper. I have all the drawings for it at home if you're interested.

The book "Wings of Stearman" by Peter Bowers, page 56 has photos of the PT-27 FA108 with a canopy . The Canadians did not like it and returned it back to the U S Army. The US Navy liked the canopy used in FA108 and ordered 1650 canopy frames from Piper. There is also a photo of a Navy N2S-5, with the canopy, taken Glenview Naval Air Station. I did not copy this photo because of possible copyright problems.

Below is the PT-27 FA108 photo from Boeing.
