 Post subject: T-28 VS T-6
PostPosted: Thu Jan 03, 2008 7:37 pm
What are some of the pros and cons about the two types? Average ball-park cost to purchase per type, manuverability, reliability, expense to maintain, would you go with a T-6 to a T-28? or is it not necessary? If you had a choice, what would you rather own and why?

Just my need to know .... lolol

Real pilots fly T-6s,

A T-28 is just too easy to fly for training, it does however make a very good engine out trainer.

A T-6 is very easy to maintain, not as many systems as a 28,

T-28 is a far more complex, maintenece intensive & gas guzzling a/c. It also has a complex electricial systemthat makes you think the Brits designed it
T-6 is less expensive, easier to maintan, has a better motor, likes grass fields and is by far more a simplier and reliable a/c. The T-28 isn't called the rubix cube of warbirds for nothing

My valuable opinion...

T-28:
Faster - PRO
Uglier - CON
Nosewheel - CON
Larger carbon footprint (did I just type that?) - CON
Lots more maintenance - CON
Flies like a Piper Cherokee/no challenge - CON
Engines fail frequently - CON
Need a big head and a formation certificate to fly - CON
Fly this and you aren't automatically qualified to fly a T-6 - CON

T-6:
Slower - CON
Classic - PRO
More history - PRO
Tailwheel - PRO
Lower fuel consumption - PRO
Far lower maintenance cost - PRO
Owners are friendlier - PRO
Go air racing! - PRO
Fly this well and you are qualified to fly ANY piston fighter AND the T-28 - PRO
The average T-6 is slightly cheaper than the average T-28 - PRO

CON-after putting a million bucks into it you still have a T-28 when you're finished  :?

T-6 makes a better photo ship (canopy can be slid back and in SOME the seat can be turned sideways)

T-28 the canopy is in the way and you get reflections on your pics if you shoot through the glass...

Both are fun rides, tho....

BDK, very good summary. But of course there are some nice guys that fly T-28s. Like Gordon and Gordon, but I forgot they sold it and got a T-6.
I got to go with what Tiger said one time, "If they are so great, how come they are all for sale."
Jack, that may be one of the best quotes ever on WIX.
And to be serious, thanks for most all warbirds.

A wise man once said "A T-6 trains great pilots. A T-28 trains great mechanics."

Yep, BDK sums it all up.

One of my bosses had a T-28 for a couple of years; had enough problems with it that he sold it and bought a T-6. He's way happier now!

Well, that particular observation was kind of stereotypical in nature since I do know and have known some very friendly T-28 owners over the years.

I cannot however say that I am an unbiased observer with respect to the two types (and yes, I have flown both).

Another two cons:

T-28:
Horizontal stab fatigue cracking mod - CON

T-6:
Attach angle AD - CON

A T-28 B/C has good power and good climb. I think they cruise about 180 K, so it is a little easier to fly formation with them like a photo flight than a T-6. They also have lot's of baggage room. I have only 2 flights in B and I have never had the chance to fly an A model. I have been told the A is a little nicer for acro than the heavier ones. An experienced acro pilot bought a T-28 B/C and decided not to do a low altitude act in it.
I know at one time there were some engine failure problems, perhaps with some older military overhauls. Is this still the case, I don't recall many recent ones, but I don't follow the 28s much?

The late/great John Herlihy did a awesome acro routine in his T-28B!
He flew in our shows here 4 years in a row in the P-51D and the 28. Both were great but seeing that Trojan being flown with such grace and finesse was way cool. I didn't know the a/c could do a 8 point roll 8) I'm g;ad I've got it all on video :!:
