Here's what a "small world" the USAF is:

This is a photo of me on my very first combat mission -- Operation SOUTHERN WATCH in February '03 -- flying that very airplane 89-0471 (you can see the last three digits of the serial on the inside of the nose gear door on the left side of the pic)!

I'm on the left and my WSO, "Cooter" Flemming, is on the right.

Is that not the coolest thing ever?

Were you at SJ then or was the aircraft at LN?

Hats off to you Sir! Glad I could share that with you. I was just digging through some old photos and remember the refueling mission I was flying with and well, I am speechless, it is just a small world!

Whatever tail number maintenance (who 'owns' the airplane) puts in the scheduled flying line is what we get.

Taking banndit's question a bit further, are jets sometimes swapped from squadron to squadron within a wing on an 'as needed' basis? Reason I ask is because you mentioned that you were with the 336th, but that's a 335th emblem on the intake.

I know this was done in the past, but am curious to know if it's still done today.

Yes, jets are definitely swapped between units for various reasons all the time.

In the case of ol' 471 there, it was still a 335th jet at the time but it was used as an "air spare" during the 336th deployment. When a yellow tail broke, that green tail ended up in the middle east instead.
