Warbird Information Exchange

I recall watching on TV many years ago as a wee lad, a film or documentary (I would imagine the former) featuring/about the USAAF in the ETO. There was lots of actual and staged combat footage and I have a vivid memory of a scene in which a heavy (either B17 or B24) had been damaged or was under attack from 2 or 3 Luftwaffe single engine fighters. The bomber crew either decided on a ruse and pretended to surrender, lowering their undercarriage to indicate this, or had a problem that led to the same. But then they got themselves sorted, pulled up the gear, and opened up on the fighters with turrets and waist gunners etc. I cannot remember the outcome of that, but I would imagine this was a "our brave lads" film and they got away with it.

That story has made the rounds for quite sometime. Usually, it is associated with how the 100th BG got the name "Bloody 100th".
Today, most historians consider it a myth, after much research from the 100th and Luft adversaries. A possible explanation is given in Martin Middlebrook's, The Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission .
