For me those are some of the hardest pictures to look at. :( Same goes with the ol slow motion video of a German fighter on a 17 just chewing the hell out of the tail and ball turret gunner.

60 Something years on .....

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, well shall remember them.

The American Air Musuem at Duxfords tribute to the fallen.
A 6 foot high glass panel. One for each Fighter and Bomber Group. Each etched symbol represents the mission loss of a an aircraft by that group. It still brings a lump to my throat every time I walk past it.

Bless them all for the sacrifice they made.

In today's society, we become numb to images of death and destruction. While looking at these it suddenly hit me. This was real. Not a drawing or animation. It was probably kids my age or younger in there. Doing then, what is unthinkable for many nowadays. The ultimate sacrifice indeed.
Thanks for posting this Jack.

i can't even conceive the horror of centrifical force in trying to get out of a burning & spinning plane. everybody thinks you just bail, not the case by a long shot!!

When I watched the old footage of the Fort going down in the Memphis Belle documentary as a kid, I always wondered why they didn't "just bail out." Now, having crawled around in a B-17 while bouncing around on a turbulent summerday, I can understand a bit of what they faced. And I was in shorts and a t-shirt, not insulated flying suit, flak jacket, O2 mask, and parachute. I'm amazed that anybody made it out of those aircraft.
