Warbird Information Exchange

There must have been a lot of official photos taken of Lady be Good(and surely some of Kee Bird) by the search and recovery teams. I have looked and looked online and come up with the same few photos. I have also looked at the National Archives online and come up empty. Does anyone know of any way to access the original reports and photos?

I found some high res shots on the net taken at the first inspections. The are US Air Force photos. I did not book-mark the site but here is one of the captions/neg numbers to the three images I downloaded.

Wow, great shot PeterA! I guess this is what remains of the Lady today after the Libyans removed what was left at the crash site and taken to Tobruk? Where is the rest of the fuselage? Is it not there or is it all torn apart

Yes, I see the rear fuselage behind the right wing, but where is the forward fuselage and cockpit? Gone?

It is with the rest, although like the whole aircraft, there's a lot missing as it has been heavily 'souvenired' (mostly by western visitors).

Peter presented an article with photos in a recent issue of Aeroplane magazine, with full details. He may share more here, but a quick search on the forum will provide a bit more data as well.

Hi ,
There has been a few other posts here on the LBG that show the cockpit upside down behind the rest of the wreckage. there is a lot of the fusalge still attached, if you look at were the leading edge of the wing meets the fusalge you will see the navagators position is there up to the cockpit. It would look best displayed at the N.M.U.S.A.F. check out the other posts it should answer any more questions on whats left.

All that was in the desert was recovered to Tobruk with out any further degradation. The medium and smaller sections are positioned behind the wing in the corner of a guarded compound.

The Libyans are to be congratulated on their foresight in recovering the LBG some years back for future posterity.

I thought I had posted a number of shots here previously, but anyway...

Thanks for posting more great pictures! I didn't know about the "Aeroplane" magazine article. I'll try and track that one down. And being new around here I didn't think to search the archives, so I really appreciate the photos. They are amazing and it's nice to know that much of the "Lady" still survives today (even if she's pretty torn up).

Fade to Black...

I have plumbed the depths of the NMUSAF site as well as the LBG site. There are 6 or 7 photos which seem to be used and and can be found consistently. There must be a LOT of pictures in some dusty Air Force file from the original rescue and later recovery missions. Those are what I am most interested in. I have also emailed Mr. Martinez from the LBG site to see if he would have any knowledge of how to access those files and photos, but he has never replied. The pictures posted above(the black and whites) have the look of shots someone took on an early visit to LBG with their personal camera. Interesting.

They were scanned by the gentleman in the picture and sent to me a couple of years ago from his personal collection and they have never been published. He was one of the first Americans to visit after being discovered by the British oil guys.
