Bad news......

http://www.airshowbuzz.com/forums/index ... entry14372

"MISSION UPDATE:

We'll post a video update as soon as we can but here's the unfortunate situation. From Karen Hinton:

It's almost certain a cracked liner. That means new head and bank.
So, Ed in the P-51 and the Pilatus are heading back out right now for Narsarsuac, Greenland as the weather is still good. We will take the Sovereign jet to either Reykjavik or on to the UK. No word on if we are staying over one more night here in Goose or going on today yet.
Disappointment all around but the good news is everyone is safe and the planes are back safe. Repairs will be made to get Glacier Girl to Oshkosh, but it would not be prudent to fly a new engine over the Atlantic for the test flights."

I had a funny feeling somthing like this was gonna happen....

Its still very sad. But everybody must realize what this means right? This only makes the legacy that much more enduring and meangingful. Maybe by the next time they give it a shot, they'll be a TV broadcast of the journey. Therefore making the epic journey more known to a much greater amount of people. Who knows, maybe there will be a couple of other P-38's and a B-17 to keep Glacier Girl company?

I think this is good news. Any time you catch a problem before it becomes a flaming aerial fight for survival, that is a good thing. But as for the comment on not running a new engine over the water, I defer to Captain Ron:

"If anything's going to happen, it's going to happen out there, so let's go get out there."

Sad to hear it isnt going to happen this year. Hopefully they can try again next season.

However I think it can be said that so far it was a great success as far as publicity and raising awarness about Warbirds and the veterans that flew and served with and around them. I know they got a good amount of media coverage about the trip.

Glacier Girl's attempt to complete her mission has ended for now. She will remain in Goose Bay while Miss Velma continues on to England. It is human spirit to never give up and the team is now focused on completing Bolero for the Mustang.

It's a little crazy right now, but I just talked with Ed. He's at 5500 feet, 34 min to LOACH. Rod Lewis, Steve and John Hinton are in the Pilatus. Flight of two.
More shortly.

Nothing except the safety of everyone involved is of any real and lasting importance. And best of luck to Ed.

I'm not the most superstitious in the bunch, but 0-2, I would not try the 3rd.

Good luck to everyone getting back safely!

The trip is still going, but Glacier Girl needs an engine change. So Shipley has made it to Greenland and the Hinton bros, Rod Lewis and crew are still going strong with Miss Velma. Keep on ASB to see what happens. Ed usually will post a video during the day letting us know what's up. Jim

Better safe than sorry. At least it's something repairable.

So does this mean that Mudge will be skipping Duxford?

i'm glad common sense prevailed for the lives involved & the historic icon. another day of glory will come, but it was still a noble effort.

Just think about this...If the liner had waited to break til she got to the UK, that would mean she'd have to spend an entire airshow season in the UK breakin in the new engine! :)

Apparently that stubborn P-38 just doesn't want to go to England.
