A Willamette OR. woman doing family history research found and had her long lost realtive finally laid to rest, 88 years after he died. Peter Knapp, a survivor of the Civil War, including capture and brutal treatment in a prison camp, and a veteran of the GAR passed away in 1924 but his ashes were never retrieved by family members.
She gained posession of his remains and had them interred in the Veterans Cemetary in Willamete OR. with full military honors, he is the first and last Civil War vet buried there and the last Civil War veteran to be laid to rest. The best part is he's now alongside his wife who also died in 1924.
