I was recently given a new old stock Merlin piston, still covered in 35 year old cosmoline, and after I have gotten it cleaned up, I am wondering if there is a way to tell, based on the part number, if it is an American made piston, or a British made one? Below are photos of the ID markings. ![]() ![]() |

RR P/Ns typically begin with a D for the Merlin, GN for the Griffon. Thats for parts they designed and made. Packard P/Ns are all numbers and begin with 60, 61, 62. Looks like their is a D on it and no 60 series so I'd cautiously claim RR. Their also maybe a production by a vendor for Packard using a RR design standard so I'm not 100 percent. |

I'd edge towards RR simply for the use of 'drams' on piston weight. Not normal US practice. |

I'm not certain it's either, unless it's a very early piston. Do you have a picture of the whole piston? |
